Position Summary - This role signifies the supervisory tier within the Family Services sector. The incumbent will oversee personnel delivering essential services aimed at enhancing the social, health, economic, behavioral, and emotional well-being of individuals and families supported by local social service agencies. Responsibilities include supervising, training, guiding, and developing staff while monitoring case management operations.
Key Responsibilities (Illustrative Only) -
- Oversees social workers, assistants, and other personnel;
- Establishes and enforces performance objectives for quality and quantity of work produced by the unit;
- Assesses social service initiatives and associated budgets;
- Implements effective human resource practices in staff supervision;
- Fosters and maintains positive working relationships;
- Suggests policy modifications based on program effectiveness evaluations;
- Handles complex or sensitive cases;
- Communicates program details to other organizations and the public;
- Engages in community planning and the development of new resources, employment opportunities, and community work sites.
Skills- Proficient in utilizing personal computers and relevant software, as well as operating a motor vehicle.
Abilities- Proven capability to: organize and manage work activities while assisting others in their planning; develop programs and procedures; make informed decisions in challenging situations; communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; apply treatment and intervention strategies; interpret laws, policies, and regulations concerning human services, ensuring compliance and recommending necessary changes; supervise staff working with clients; analyze situations to make sound judgments within existing legal and policy frameworks; and train, assess, lead, and develop subordinate personnel.
Education and Experience- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a Human Services discipline or a Bachelor's degree in any field accompanied by at least two years of relevant experience in a Human Services context. Significant experience in the designated program area/human services programs and completion of required training programs. Supervisory experience or leadership role experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Social Worker license from the Commonwealth of Virginia is advantageous.
Special Requirements- All candidates will undergo employment verification, reference checks, education verification, a DMV/driving record assessment, a Central Registry check, and a criminal history evaluation to identify any barrier crimes as outlined in the Code of Virginia.
All employment offers are contingent upon satisfactory results from the required checks and screenings.
The employee must be prepared to work in community emergency shelters during natural disasters or emergencies.
Employees must also comply with local vehicle insurance regulations.
