Job Summary

The Supervisor, Comparative Medicine – Husbandry is a key role within our organization, responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the animal facility. This position requires strong leadership and communication skills, as well as the ability to manage personnel and maintain compliance with regulations governing the use of laboratory animals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of animal care staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Develop and implement training programs for husbandry technicians, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
  • Establish and maintain performance metrics to assess technician productivity and identify areas for improvement.
  • Manage assigned projects for husbandry program development, including scope, timeline, and task delegation.
  • Maintain records and reports for regulatory compliance, including annual reports for the USDA, IACUC, and AAALAC.
  • Create and review documents related to husbandry tasks and processes, including SOPs, working instructions, and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with other departments and external vendors to develop equipment and facility repairs and preventive maintenance processes.
  • Make recommendations to improve infrastructure, systems, and outcomes, and take action to implement changes.
  • Assess and maintain equipment safety standards, and coordinate with other facilities departments and contractors for maintenance and repairs.
  • Oversee software implementation and utilization in the vivarium, providing feedback to vendors and training to lab staff as needed.
  • Maintain Comparative Medicine space inventory and assign animal holding and procedural space to investigators.
  • Develop and conduct vivarium walkthrough training sessions for investigators and their laboratory staff.
  • Oversee animal census collection procedures, including reconciliation.
  • Coordinate with other CSMC Organizational units to ensure regulatory and policy compliance and efficient Department operations.
Qualifications

Education:

High School Diploma/GED – Required

Bachelor's Degree in related field – Preferred

Work Experience:

8 years of Laboratory Animal Science

2 years of team leadership of animal care staff in AAALAC accredited animal research facility

Technical Abilities:

Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Webridge, PeopleSoft

Licenses & Certifications:

Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) Upon hire required
