Position Overview:


An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a vital member of the healthcare team, recognized for their expertise in breastfeeding management and care. This credential signifies that the individual has fulfilled specific eligibility criteria and successfully passed a comprehensive examination.

The IBCLC credential has been a benchmark since 1985, confirming that the practitioner possesses the necessary knowledge to:

  • Advocate for breastfeeding as a crucial public health initiative
  • Provide leadership across various sectors, from local communities to policymakers
  • Foster environments conducive to breastfeeding
  • Support families in achieving their breastfeeding objectives
  • Address and manage complex lactation issues
The IBCLC operates both independently and collaboratively, empowering mothers, children, and families to realize their breastfeeding aspirations.


This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting nursing care for patients, adhering to organizational policies and professional standards.

The position requires specialized knowledge, clinical judgment, and nursing skills to assess data and provide care tailored to the physical and developmental needs of assigned patients.

Responsibilities include delivering lactation education and personalized patient and family instruction. The consultant collaborates with staff to select and provide relevant patient education materials based on identified needs, and offers community and staff training in lactation expertise. Acts as a subject matter expert for both patients and healthcare staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing the physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs of patients.
  • Reviewing patient history and collaborating with families to ensure timely completion of assessments.
  • Conducting ongoing assessments in accordance with established policies.


Providing individualized lactation care plans, education, and interventions in collaboration with patients, families, and staff. Developing continuing education programs related to lactation and updating educational materials based on current needs and advancements in the field.

Formulating comprehensive care plans, including discharge strategies, based on assessment data and input from patients, families, and the healthcare team. Implementing care plans through direct patient care and coordinating activities among the healthcare team.


Ensuring continuity of care by effectively communicating patient status to caregivers. Evaluating patient and family responses to care and modifying care plans as necessary. Monitoring patient progress towards established goals in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Documenting all aspects of patient care, including assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Engaging in evidence-based practice and participating in research initiatives within the clinical setting. Contributing to shared leadership within the unit or facility.


Participating in the education and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors. Supporting the professional growth of others through mentoring and precepting when appropriate.

Adhering to established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while providing exceptional service to all customers of Foundation Health.


Qualifications:
Current RN licensure in the state of practice. IBCLC, CLC, CBC, or CBS certification is required. Current BLS certification is mandatory. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification must be obtained within six months.

Experience, training, and education relevant to the role are essential. Clinical performance competencies must be maintained.

Preferred qualifications include a BSN and at least one year of experience, particularly in an inpatient lactation setting.
