Ophthalmic Scribe

Ophthalmic Scribes / Technicians at Associated Retinal Consultants use advanced ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work-ups of patients in a clinic setting, providing scribing services for physicians and assisting with examinations and treatment of patients.
Key responsibilities include:
- Proficient keyboarding skills and use of electronic medical records and image management systems.
- Skilled in ophthalmic terminology, with the ability to type words accurately and efficiently.
- Ability to obtain patient past and current medical and ophthalmic history, including information regarding medications, allergies, and family history of eye problems.
- Identifying potential patient concerns and bringing them to the attention of the Office Coordinator or physician as appropriate.
- Measuring and recording distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity, and performing preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
- Performing basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by the physician.
- Entering patient information under the direction of the physician, in accordance with regulatory and professional guidelines.
- Assisting in the application of dressings, shields, and eye patches.
- Basic understanding of examination and procedure codes (ICD-9 codes) when inputting into the Electronic Medical Records system.
- Ensuring accurate procedure coding/charges for all procedures/drugs for all patients and correct diagnosis codes.
- Keeping examination, treatment, laser, and other assigned rooms cleaned and stocked with supplies, and maintaining up-to-date drug counts.
- Traveling to other locations as assigned.
- Clerical functions such as filing, key boarding, scheduling patients, cleaning, stocking, or other tasks as needed.
Work Schedule:
Varies, but typically Monday through Friday with working hours ranging from 7:00 a.m. Potential for Saturday work hours depending on location. Work shift hours vary depending on employment status, but generally are 8 hours in length.
Physical demands include moderate physical activity (standing, bending, sitting, walking, pulling, and lifting) for most of the work shift.
Work environment includes a clean office environment and possible hazardous chemicals.
