Osawatomie State Hospital is a licensed facility in Kansas dedicated to providing care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, ensuring services are accessible regardless of financial capability. The facility comprises two hospitals: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC), the latter being a 60-bed establishment certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

This position is based at Adair Acute Care within Osawatomie State Hospital, with variable days and hours, including potential weekend shifts. A negative drug screening is a prerequisite for employment.

All personnel are expected to collaborate harmoniously with colleagues to deliver efficient and effective customer service. Responsibilities include utilizing available time to assist others, fostering a positive work environment through courteous interactions, and adhering to conduct standards regarding attendance and punctuality.

Role Overview:

The primary objective of the Recreation Therapist role is to provide optimal patient care and outcomes by addressing the unique mental, social, physical, and spiritual needs of each patient. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing patient caseload upon admission
  • Developing individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the treatment team
  • Identifying goals and evidence-based recreation therapy interventions
  • Implementing group and individual recreation therapy sessions
  • Documenting weekly progress and treatment notes
  • Maintaining ongoing rapport with patients to gauge treatment response
  • Encouraging patient participation in scheduled treatments
  • Revising treatment plans as necessary
  • Assisting in the planning and coordination of programs and events

Physical Requirements:

This position necessitates physical strength to perform tasks such as pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, squatting, walking, and standing for extended periods. The role may also involve lifting or restraining individuals and responding to aggressive behaviors using trained techniques. Observational skills are essential for recognizing and addressing individuals in distress.

Qualifications:

Education: A minimum of a bachelor's degree with NCTRC certification (CTRS) and two years of relevant experience, or eligibility to obtain certification through NCTRC examination within six months with three years of relevant experience. Education may substitute for experience as deemed appropriate by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in providing therapeutic activities in a hospital or rehabilitation environment.

Positions in this classification require candidates to pass a drug screening test and a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with departmental policies.
