The Building Code Compliance Division (BCC) of the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) is dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of students, staff, and the public by enforcing compliance with NYC Codes and Zoning regulations. Position Overview

The Senior Architect may serve as a project leader, overseeing and directing the work of junior staff on multiple complex construction initiatives, including high schools and specialized projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage several projects concurrently.
  • Lead multiple projects and/or oversee the architectural discipline within the project.
  • Ensure adherence to codes and standards, resolving any issues that arise.
  • Supervise a team of 10 or more junior Architects, Technical Inspectors, Quality Assurance Specialists, and other support staff.
  • Act as the Managing Architect in the absence of the primary Managing Architect.
  • Assist in the development of new design standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate with consulting firms and individual consultants, conducting design reviews as necessary.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

In addition, the Senior Architect may perform duties of a Project Architect when needed:

  • Direct junior Architects and Engineers, Technical Inspectors, and support staff.
  • Work on more complex design projects, including large primary schools and specialized buildings.
  • Lead a team to train and develop internal staff in architectural practices.
  • Participate in departmental seminars and workshops.
  • Mentor junior employees for professional growth.
  • Train new staff and outside consultants on SCA standards and procedures.
  • Coordinate consulting work and conduct design reviews.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Additionally, the Senior Architect may undertake responsibilities of an Associate Architect when necessary:

  • Supervise the preparation of various architectural documents, including reports and specifications.
  • Collaborate with a diverse range of professionals, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Function as a project leader, coordinating work with other Architects and Engineers.
  • Oversee junior staff working on less complex design and construction projects.
  • Conduct design reviews for multiple projects.
  • Administer the construction phase, including site observations and report preparation.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of architectural and engineering principles.
  • Train new staff and outside consultants on SCA standards.
  • Sign and seal documents for official filing.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Division Responsibilities:
  • Work within the Building Code Compliance Division to ensure adherence to all building codes and zoning regulations.
  • Interpret zoning and building codes, addressing any interpretation concerns.
  • Utilize the NYC DOB NOW system for approvals and inspections.
  • Examine plans and applications for compliance, signing and sealing documents as necessary.
  • Review zoning waiver requests and direct applicants in resolving complex zoning issues.
  • Assess new building applications for compliance with construction logistics and public safety.
  • Generate requirements for permits and inspections, guiding staff in document processing.
  • Represent the BCC Division in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in special projects as directed by senior management.
Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Architecture (Required).
  • Registered Architect certification from the NYS Department of Education.
  • Six years of full-time experience as a Registered Architect, with three years in a leadership role.
  • A graduate degree in Architecture may substitute for two years of experience, provided the candidate has four years of experience as a Registered Architect.
