Position Summary:
We are currently seeking a meticulous and enthusiastic individual to join our Testing team as a Senior Test Engineer specializing in Energy Storage and Distribution Systems.
In this role, you will play a crucial part in the development of essential components and subsystems for our VTOL electric aircraft.
Our team comprises exceptionally talented, proactive, and hands-on individuals who thrive in a dynamic and rewarding environment. We are looking for like-minded professionals who aspire to make a significant impact in the transportation sector.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate closely with Battery Management System (BMS) firmware engineers to conduct battery pack-level verification and validation tests, assessing battery algorithm performance.
2. Develop comprehensive test plans and procedures ensuring proper instrumentation and data collection for repeatable and consistent results.
3. Execute acceptance tests on flight-ready battery packs and prepare necessary documentation for flight articles.
4. Work alongside the battery design engineering team and fellow test engineers to conduct various compliance tests for battery packs, including thermal and humidity cycling, vibration and shock, and electromagnetic interference.
5. Prepare and execute long-term durability assessments on the mechanical structure of battery packs.
6. Conduct characterization, qualification, and reliability tests on battery pack components such as contactors, connectors, fuses, and PCBs.
7. Analyze data from tests to generate reports that provide actionable feedback to the battery design engineering team for design optimization.
8. Coordinate and lead meetings for test kickoff, preparation, preliminary and critical reviews, and data analysis to ensure alignment of activities.
9. Maintain the battery testing area and equipment, adhering to best practices, thorough documentation, and safety protocols.
10. Collaborate with the battery design engineering team and other test engineers to facilitate the incremental automation of pack and BMS functional test setups.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with experience in Battery Pack systems.
2. Proven experience with high-voltage, high-power systems.
3. Familiarity with high voltage electric vehicle power electronics systems.
4. Experience in environmental stress testing, including thermal and humidity cycling, vibration, and electromagnetic interference.
5. Solid understanding of battery monitoring techniques, cell and pack failure modes, and high voltage safety protocols.
6. Strong skills in data handling, processing, and presentation.
7. A positive attitude with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
8. Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical capabilities.
9. Commitment to maintaining a clean workspace and managing tools and equipment effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with Battery Management Systems hardware.
2. Familiarity with testing hardware to industry standards such as DO-160, DO-311A, SAE, or MIL-810.
3. Knowledge of battery pack cycle testing equipment.
4. Experience with high voltage Lithium-ion battery systems.
5. Proficiency with instrumentation and data acquisition tools.
Compensation at Joby Aero, Inc. includes a competitive base salary complemented by Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
