Position Objective:

Support the daily operations of Quality Technicians, focusing on proactive assessments of internal processes rather than just verifying physical compliance. This includes conducting audits on safety protocols, layered process evaluations, standard work audits, and scrap procedure reviews. Analyze process outputs in terms of capability, including stability and capability (Cpk). Oversee the generation and follow-up of corrective actions.

Generate comprehensive reports on calibration and inspection activities. Responsible for executing the company's calibration system, which applies to all measurement and testing equipment used to evaluate the acceptability of components and assemblies in Wagner products. This includes equipment in engineering and quality testing labs, production areas, and occasionally at supplier locations. Assist in conducting detailed First Article Inspections on various manufactured components and assemblies to ensure compliance with specifications. Communicate inspection results through appropriate documentation, such as First Article Inspection Reports, SAP movements, and Quality Notifications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and training on process auditing and validation techniques, as well as Wagner practices, to Quality Technicians.
  • Conduct audits and process validations across various manufacturing processes. Prepare first article inspection reports for a range of parts, including critical components with tight tolerances, using precision measurement and testing equipment. Process audits inform management and quality engineers about production readiness and process capability. First Article Inspection Reports are essential for Quality and Engineering to approve production for both in-house and supplier components.
  • Develop software programs for CMM inspections of components.
  • Manage the company's calibration program, including equipment in our certified satellite test lab, adhering to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
  • Perform calibrations on various precision inspection and testing equipment.
  • Assist in creating calibration procedures for in-house calibrated equipment. Maintain records of calibrations to comply with ISO 9001 quality system requirements, including a computerized system for equipment serialization, calibration dates, methods, resources, and results.
  • Recommend equipment needs for inspection and testing. Assist in preparing justifications for capital investments and purchase orders for inspection and testing equipment.
  • Investigate quality issues in components and assemblies evident in production processes.
  • Generate reports summarizing inspection and calibration activities.
Relationships:

Receive primary work direction from Quality Engineers and Senior Quality Engineers. Engage in frequent communication regarding inspection and audit activities with personnel in Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Testing Labs. Occasionally discuss specific quality issues and inspection methods with suppliers. Collaborate closely with calibration service providers and equipment suppliers.

Position Dimensions:

Handle confidential information, including costs and specifications. Inspection tasks typically involve surface plate work, optical comparators, material hardness testing, surface finish assessments, CMM, roundness/cylindricity testing, calipers, micrometers, and various gauges. Calibration work encompasses a range of precision measurement and testing equipment. Conduct audits of manufacturing processes and assess process capability using statistical methodologies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certificates in Precision Measurement and Gauging, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance, and ISO 17925 for calibration are desirable.
  • ASQ Certified Mechanical Inspector certification is also preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in an inspection role utilizing precision measurement and testing equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of various types of precision measurement equipment, including CMM and vision systems.
  • Familiarity with sampling plans such as ANSI/ASQ Z1.9 is necessary.
Skills:
  • Intermediate proficiency in SAP and PC software, including Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Basic understanding of statistical data analysis is required.
  • Working knowledge of analytical/scientific software, including CMM and PCDMIS.
  • Above-average math skills, including some knowledge of trigonometry.
  • Knowledge and use of metallurgical analysis equipment.
  • Excellent critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills are essential.
  • Attention to detail is crucial.
  • Tools used in this role include force gauges, torque testers, absorbance spectrophotometers, fluorescence spectrophotometry, bolt tension meters, tension meters, coating thickness gauges, sonic testers, ultrasonic flaw detectors, and ultrasonic thickness gauges.
