Soliant Education is seeking a qualified Part-Time Sign Language Interpreter to join our team in the Flint, MI area. This in-person position for the school year offers a unique chance to make a significant impact on the life of an elementary student by facilitating clear and effective communication in the classroom and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide part-time one-on-one sign language interpretation services for a deaf or hard of hearing student in an elementary school setting.
  • Interpret all spoken language from the teacher, classmates, and other school personnel into clear and accurate American Sign Language (ASL) for the student.
  • Voice interpret all signed communication from the student into spoken English for the teacher, classmates, and other school personnel.
  • Collaborate with the teacher, specialists, and family to ensure the student's full participation and comprehension in all learning activities.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment where the student feels supported and empowered to communicate effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student information and adhere to professional ethics.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in sign language interpreting for educational settings.
Requirements:
  • Michigan State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification or equivalent.
  • Prior experience working with deaf or hard of hearing students in an educational setting, particularly elementary grades, is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of child development and learning theories as they apply to deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Excellent fluency and accuracy in both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with the student, teacher, specialists, family, and other school staff.
  • Ability to adapt interpreting style to meet the specific needs and communication preferences of the student.
  • Commitment to creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Discretion and professionalism to maintain confidentiality of student information.
