The State of Montana is seeking a highly skilled Meat Poultry Inspector to join our team in ensuring the safety and quality of meat and poultry products processed in Montana.

Job Summary

The Meat Poultry Inspector will be responsible for conducting site inspections of slaughter and processing facilities, verifying compliance with state and federal regulations, and ensuring that meat and poultry products meet safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct site inspections of slaughter and processing facilities to verify compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Verify that meat and poultry products meet safety and quality standards
  • Sample products for laboratory testing and verify plant records
  • Inspect labels and packaging of products
  • Record all findings and tasks in a federal database (PHIS)
  • Document daily activities in weekly reports
Working Conditions

The Meat Poultry Inspector will work in a fast-paced environment, conducting inspections in various types of slaughter and processing plants. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience in relevant food safety or meat industries
  • Valid Montana Driver's license and ability to safely operate a state-owned motor vehicle
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a Meat/Poultry Inspector
  • Previous HACCP experience or training
Conditions of Employment

The individual in this position is required to live within a 60-mile radius of Shelby, MT. This position requires the ability to have and maintain a valid Montana Driver's license and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle with an acceptable driving record.
