Position Overview

The Laboratory Support Specialist is responsible for performing essential clerical tasks and managing laboratory specimens in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. This role operates under the guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor and the Director of Operations.

Essential Qualifications
  • Prior experience in customer service is required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensures timely delivery of routine, timed, and urgent specimens, adhering to established turnaround times.
  • Coordinates the dispatch of PKU tests to the State lab, accurately documenting session numbers and preparing necessary packing lists.
  • Engages with engineering teams for routine maintenance of centrifuge equipment.
  • Completes temperature monitoring reports for laboratory freezers and refrigerators.
  • Adheres to Infection Control standards and utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in compliance with hospital policies to maintain safety.
  • Scans required PKU results into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Communicates with laboratories regarding pending test results and ensures patient documents are scanned into the Cerner system upon receipt.
  • Handles phone inquiries promptly and takes messages as necessary.
  • Obtains essential supplies for specimen collection processes.

General Duties:
  • Maintains compliance by ensuring timely completion of licensures, certifications, competencies, and health requirements.
  • Fulfills accountability and timekeeping expectations as per organizational policies, ensuring adherence to communication standards.
  • Strives to meet or exceed service expectations as measured by internal departmental surveys.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • One year of experience in a high-volume customer service environment is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in an accredited healthcare facility is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.
  • Able to maintain composure and adapt in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficient in Cerner and Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
