Job Overview

Reporting To: Standardized Patient Educator

Role Summary:

In collaboration with the Standardized Patient Educator, the Standardized Patient (SP) plays a crucial role in simulating patient scenarios to enhance the clinical competencies of medical students. This position requires the SP to undergo physical examinations by medical students and healthcare professionals, with certain exceptions for specific examinations. The role is part-time and operates on an as-needed basis.

Key Information:

The anticipated workload for this position is between 0-10 hours per month. Candidates should be available for shifts on designated days during standard working hours. SPs will receive their schedules at least six weeks in advance, with opportunities to fill last-minute openings.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Act as a realistic patient for interviews and physical examinations.
  • Wear appropriate attire for simulations while being observed for educational purposes.
  • Provide constructive feedback to medical students both verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare and familiarize oneself with assigned scripts prior to training sessions.
  • Engage in ongoing training to enhance performance and evaluation skills.
  • Ensure all necessary materials for case simulations are available during training.
  • Maintain a tidy workspace, including preparation of examination rooms.
  • Participate in personal assessments conducted by medical supervisors as required.
  • Keep track of scheduled workdays and hours diligently.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Educational Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to effectively portray various patient scenarios consistently.
  • Adherence to established protocols and procedures.
  • Comfort with personal health to ensure accurate portrayal of assigned cases.
  • Demonstrated objectivity in interactions with examinees from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong reading and writing abilities to comprehend detailed training materials.
  • Excellent memory recall for providing feedback to examinees.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain the integrity of assigned cases without displaying conflicting health conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a Standardized Patient.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Background in teaching or tutoring.

Equipment Utilized:

Standard clinical tools may be employed, including but not limited to blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, and other diagnostic instruments.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Physical: Frequent sitting, standing, and walking; occasional bending and squatting.
  • Mental: Regular reading and comprehension; occasional writing and calculations.

Environmental Considerations:

  • No exposure to excessive noise or hazardous conditions.
  • No requirement to operate motorized equipment.
