We are seeking a Certified Respiratory Therapist (RRT) to join our dedicated team in the Respiratory Care Services department. This position is for a Full-Time, Day shift role at the University of Chicago Medicine. Our team primarily serves adult patient populations, and we also offer opportunities for students currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program.

Position Summary

In this capacity, the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) will administer respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under the guidance of department leadership and physicians. Responsibilities include assessing patients to evaluate cardiopulmonary status, implementing appropriate care protocols, and maintaining or improving cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. The therapist will initiate and manage both emergent and non-emergent non-invasive ventilation and invasive mechanical ventilation according to departmental policies and protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administers supplemental oxygen and medical gas therapy as prescribed by physician orders or established departmental protocols, ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Delivers intermittent nebulizer treatments and continuous medication delivery therapy (including bronchodilators and steroids) in accordance with physician orders or departmental protocols, documenting procedures in real-time.
  • Performs bronchopulmonary hygiene and airway care procedures, implementing techniques such as chest physiotherapy and incentive spirometry as directed by physician orders.
  • Initiates and maintains non-invasive ventilation procedures, assessing patient tolerance and making necessary adjustments for optimal comfort and effectiveness.
  • Manages mechanical ventilation, conducting thorough patient assessments to recommend weaning plans and documenting all procedures accurately.
  • Conducts Arterial Blood Gas analysis, troubleshooting equipment and ensuring compliance with quality control standards.
  • Facilitates patient transport within the facility while ensuring oxygen delivery systems and mechanical ventilators are properly managed.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two years).
  • Holds a Diploma or Certificate of Completion and an Associate's Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and documentation skills.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from The National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Illinois.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare provider certification (American Heart Association).
  • Certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation Program, PALS, or ACLS preferred, depending on assigned patient care area.
