Senior Coating Quality Inspector

Overview:
The Coating Inspector is required to have expertise and proficiency in the application of protective coatings for pipelines, fabricated piping, and storage tanks. The inspector should be well-versed in the application of protective coatings, operation of testing equipment, monitoring coating applications, and enforcing specifications set forth by the company, industry standards, and manufacturers. Familiarity with safety regulations related to coating applications as outlined by OSHA Construction Industry standards is essential. This role involves daily inspection of surface preparation, painting, and coating operations across various sectors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Possess comprehensive knowledge and skills regarding the application of protective coatings to pipelines, fabricated piping, and storage tanks.
- Conduct visual and non-destructive examinations on stationary equipment in compliance with API and ASME standards, providing technical recommendations for repairs, re-rates, replacements, and alterations of plant equipment.
- Perform routine tests on materials, services in process, or finished projects, comparing results with company quality standards.
- Report findings to the Supervisor for analysis and necessary actions.
- Visually inspect for apparent defects.
- Conduct detailed visual inspections when necessary to ascertain the quality of products/services where limits are not clearly defined.
- Identify defective work and assist in implementing corrective measures.
- Document results on inspection forms or charts and report the number of defects identified.
- Maintain and post inspection data forms and charts, including quality levels of special quality studies.
- May serve as a quality control department clerk, managing all quality records for the facility.
- Ensure that all materials used in job assignments comply with client company requirements.
- Collaborate closely with the Repair/Cut-Out Welding Inspector, NDT, and Contractor's Representative to ensure that no repairs or cutouts are improperly coated.
- Ensure adherence to all specifications and safety standards.
- Document and report material usage and waste.
- Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential job duties effectively.
- Familiarity with safety standards applicable to coating applications as outlined by OSHA Construction Industry Standards.
- In-depth knowledge of API 510/570 (certification preferred) and ASME standards.
- Experience with non-destructive testing is advantageous but not mandatory.
- At least 2 years of experience in the application or inspection of coatings in the petroleum or chemical industries, or one year of experience in coating application or inspection with either NACE CIP Level III certification or SSPC PCI Level III certification.
- API 1169 Certification is required for inspectors.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.
- Ability to traverse both even and uneven surfaces.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including fire retardant clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, and respirator.
- Ability to enter confined spaces.
- Ability to walk up to one mile on industrial plant and construction sites outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work in protective clothing that may elevate body temperatures for short periods.
- Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders independently.
- Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while using hearing protection.
- Ability to sit at a desk and operate a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to stand, use hands and fingers, grip, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and communicate effectively.
- Ability to see with visual acuity and distinguish between colors.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver's license.
- Ability to regularly lift and carry 15 lbs., with occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs.
Coating Inspector:
- Review and approve coating execution plans.
- Review and approve daily inspection reports.
- Witness hold points on all major coating jobs.
- Witness QC tests being performed (holiday test, CSN test, Profile test, etc.).
- Coordinate with Contract QC on work processes (percentage complete, sq ft blasted, gallons used, etc.).
- Recommend coating systems utilized in the R-specs.
- Assess existing coating conditions of upcoming jobs and recommend repair procedures.
- Document each hold point in the job process with photographs.
Miscellaneous Duties:
- Complete Haz Reviews for approval by the I&H department.
- Sign permits as a sponsor for inspection companies performing work (drone, MFE, X-Ray, etc.).
- Oversee and coordinate with external shell scan crews.
- Mark up weld repairs per API 653 on new weld jobs.
- Witness QC tests performed (PT, MT, Vacuum Test, etc.).
- Conduct API 653 external inspections including:
- Reporting on tank conditions.
- UT all nozzles attached to the tank.
- UT chime, shell, and roof.
- Assess coating condition.
- Perform CP tests.
- Inspect hydro on tanks using blacklight and sign off.
- Sign off final closure for tanks to be put back in service.
- Locate and assess PSV's using OSI and P&ID.
- Enter UT readings in PCMS on existing circuits and create new circuits.
- Enter external API tank reports into PSMS.
- Add recommendations to SAP.
