The School of Music at San Jose State University accommodates over 300 undergraduate music majors pursuing degrees in various disciplines, including Music (BA, BM_Composition, BM_Jazz Studies, BM_Music Education, BM_Performance) and the Master of Music. Our faculty, comprising approximately 60 accomplished artist-educators, provides students with both individual and group instruction, adhering to curricular standards that reflect best practices in music education. The School is accredited by NASM and hosts over 200 performances each season across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Music Lecturer, you will be responsible for teaching a range of courses in music, which includes:
- Applied instruction across all band and orchestral instruments, voice, and keyboard.
- Classroom courses covering various aspects of music history.
- General education courses in music.
- Leading music ensembles such as band, chamber, choir, jazz band, and orchestra at both introductory and advanced levels.
In this role, you will:
- Recognize and address the diverse needs of our student population, which includes various ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and identities, through inclusive teaching materials and strategies.
- Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to organize all classes.
- Ensure that all classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, or in-person).
- A Master's Degree is required for candidates focusing on music history, ethnomusicology, music literature, and theory.
- For studio instrumental, opera, voice, jazz, popular music, and business/commercial music courses, a Master's Degree or a Bachelor of Music combined with exceptional professional achievements is acceptable.
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student body, gained through relevant experiences.
- Ability to assess and evaluate adult learners effectively.
- Evidence of satisfactory academic performance in previous studies.
Compensation is determined based on qualifications and experience. The anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:
- L-A / Range 2: $5007 - $5675
- L-B / Range 3: $5925 - $7125
- L-C / Range 4: $6500 - $8982
- L-D / Range 5: $8184 - $9854
These figures represent the expected monthly salary for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates prorated accordingly.
