Job Summary:

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Laborer and Equipment Operator to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance crew, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to roadway maintenance, including responding to emergency situations, operating equipment, and performing manual labor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control.
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage pipes, maintaining the Right of Way, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling general tasks required to complete road maintenance projects.
  • Complete pre-trip equipment inspections and perform preventive maintenance.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of safety policies, materials, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance materials and methods.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of diverse hand and power tools.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and to respond to accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL Learners.
  • Experience in light to medium duty equipment operation comparable to that used in roadway and or roadside maintenance/construction activities.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and preparations, work zone set up and/or flagging, storm clean up, accident response and clean up.

Working Conditions:

This position requires working outside of normal work hours during emergency operations and may involve working in inclement weather conditions.
