Job Overview:

As an integral part of the optometry team, you will assist and collaborate with optometrists to ensure patients receive the highest quality of eye care. Under the direct supervision of the optometrist, your role will focus on enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the optometric practice.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Accurately document patients' medical and visual histories, prepare clinical information for the optometrist, and record vital signs as necessary in the electronic medical record (EMR). Conduct essential pre-testing, including assessments of visual skills and reflexes, and perform diagnostic tests such as OCT and Visual Fields. Maintain precise records and reports as directed by the optometrist. Administer eye drops as prescribed and assist in therapeutic procedures like foreign body removal.
  • Handle incoming phone calls and patient communications, assessing the situation and managing triage effectively. Oversee the scheduling of appointments for the optometrist.
  • Ensure that diagnostic and therapeutic instruments are maintained in a clean and accurate condition. Regularly evaluate the status of instruments and coordinate repairs or recalibrations as needed. Maintain a supply of sterile instruments and medications for ophthalmic treatments.
  • Address patient inquiries and concerns, resolving issues or directing them to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Facilitate coordination of patient care with optical dispensing, membership services, family practice, ophthalmology, pharmacy, and other relevant departments.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards regarding patient treatment and confidentiality. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Experience
  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience in an optometric or ophthalmic setting under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist, or successful completion of a JCAHPO accredited ophthalmic medical technology program is required. Alternatively, one (1) year in a healthcare support role with training in the optometry program may be acceptable.
Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Obtain a Paraoptometric Assistant Certificate, Ophthalmic Technician Certificate, or similar within 24 months of hire from recognized organizations.
  • Registered Medical Assistant certification (Washington) is required within 2 months of hire.
Additional Skills:
  • Proven experience with ophthalmic instruments, including auto-refractors and visual field testing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use instruments for preliminary and ancillary testing, as well as in administering eye drops.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a professional environment within a managed care organization, with familiarity in optometric terminology.
  • Knowledge of optometric instruments and equipment.
Preferred Experience:
  • Three (3) years of experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice.
  • Basic understanding of organizational policies and culture.
  • Familiarity with basic science and optics, as well as optometric procedures related to preliminary testing.
  • Knowledge of the instillation of optometric diagnostic and therapeutic medications.
  • Working knowledge of HealthConnect.
