Selective Insurance is seeking an experienced Sr./Trial Attorney to join our Staff Counsel operations in downstate New York. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for defending cases from initial pleadings to resolution, utilizing your exceptional client communication skills, documented trial skills, and ability to report and respond to the carrier with insight and timeliness.
Key Responsibilities- Case Preparation: Prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, letters, memoranda, reports, appeals, articles, etc. using our legal case management software.
- Discovery Practice: Direct and undertake discovery practice, including depositions, expert selection, and all other pre-trial preparations.
- Client Communication: Communicate with, meet, and regularly update the client and claims personnel regarding the status of pending matters. Communicate with opposing counsel, the courts, and others as needed.
- Research and Analysis: Research and brief issues using Lexis and other computer/web-based data sources, law reporters, and other law library materials.
- Litigation Strategy: Develop litigation strategy for all assigned cases.
- Claims Analysis: Provide analysis to claims in the form of legal opinions, recommendations, and digests of recent developments in decisional and statutory law.
- Clerical Activity: Control and direct clerical activity, in accordance with office protocol, necessary to support the function of the position.
- Reporting and Travel: Report to the managing attorney concerning the status of matters and provide other information as requested. Travel to depositions, court appearances, claims, and client meetings, and other events as necessary, representing approximately 20-25% of the employee's time.
- Additional Responsibilities: Engage in other activity as directed by the managing attorney, including limited management responsibilities if appropriate.
- Experience: At least 5 years of legal experience in the jurisdiction required - New York.
- Specialized Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in handling New York Construction/Labor Law litigation required.
- Education and Licensure: Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school required. Member in good standing of the Bar of the jurisdiction required - New York.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, or similar required. Typing skill required. Legal case management software experience preferred.
- Soft Skills: Excellent customer service, writing, and oral communication skills required.
The salary range for this position is: Trial Attorney $92,400 - $152,600; Sr. Trial Attorney $103,400 - $170,900. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include the candidate's qualifications and experience.
