About the Role

Selective Insurance is seeking a highly experienced Managing Attorney to lead our Staff Counsel Program in Elmsford, NY. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for directing and managing the activities of attorneys practicing in the Elmsford office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and develop attorneys within the Elmsford office, providing mentorship and training as needed.
  • Influence the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and performance standards among staff counsel office personnel.
  • Oversee all litigated cases handled by attorneys within the office, reviewing and editing substantive documents as necessary.
  • Analyze legal office procedures and policies for efficiency and effectiveness, proposing improvements and ensuring effective implementation.
  • Communicate and support corporate policies and strategies to staff counsel employees, addressing any concerns regarding these policies or strategies.
  • Ensure appropriate conflict checking of all matters at intake and throughout the course of litigation, maintaining the ethical conduct of all office personnel and ensuring that all attorneys are licensed and in good standing.
  • Participate in committee meetings, roundtables, and conferences within the assigned office(s) and with the claims department at large, responding to Claim Department requests.
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice, and other services to clients and claims professionals, participating in special projects or task force initiatives as requested.
  • Ensure proper usage of the Legal case management software.
  • Chair monthly meetings with attorneys and co-chair monthly staff meetings with the Legal Operations Manager.
  • Report directly to the Regional Director and balance managerial duties with a small caseload of approximately 10-15 cases.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a member in good standing of the New York Bar.
  • 10+ years of legal experience in litigation, with a focus on New York Labor Law and complex commercial litigation.
  • 5+ years of management experience relative to commercial insurance defense.
  • Strong knowledge of New York Labor Law and procedure, as well as CPLR and Administrative Law requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft products and time management.
  • Legal case management software experience.
  • Excellent customer service, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Must have a valid state-issued driver's license in good standing.
  • Travel requirements: approximately 25%.
