This position is situated within the Protection and Controls Department. The engineer will be tasked with executing protection and control projects that enhance client support. Collaboration with both internal and client engineers and designers is a vital component of this role. Furthermore, the engineer will be responsible for delivering training and guidance to junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in both new and existing Protection and Control Projects in substations
  • Configure relays and conduct relay setting calculations utilizing ASPEN, AcSELerator 5010 (SEL), and GE URPC Software
  • Prepare settings in the required format and submit them to the designated Protection and Controls Supervisor via IPS
  • Review and annotate protection schematics and elementaries
  • Utilize MOB Port to examine equipment and materials specified by substation engineers for Protection Designers
  • Work with various equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, buses, reactors, line disconnects, protective relay systems (SEL, ABB, etc.), and SCADA systems
  • Lead initiatives related to protection and control
  • Carry out all engineering and design tasks with minimal oversight
  • Supervise, mentor, and coordinate the efforts of team members to complete substation projects
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior staff
  • Identify and implement corrective actions when project objectives are not achieved
  • Interpret regulations and codes while establishing standards for construction projects
  • Promote engineering professionalism and maintain high standards
  • Develop, propose, and execute plans by defining goals, objectives, and requirements, including scheduling, resources, and comprehensive data for complex engineering tasks
  • This role may require 10-15% travel to field substations
Qualifications and Experience
  • Five to eight years of experience in the utilities sector with a focus on protection and controls
  • Five to eight years of experience managing engineering projects from start to finish
  • Five to eight years of experience in relay setting and one-line diagram design
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited)
  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) may be considered as part of the experience requirement
  • A PE License is essential
Essential Skills and Abilities
  • Intermediate proficiency in performing design calculations such as battery sizing, AC and DC loads, system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection, bus bars, fittings, insulators, ground grid design, and lightning protection
  • Intermediate understanding of standards and codes including IEEE, ANSI, NERC-PRC, NEC, and NESC
  • Demonstrate intermediate knowledge of protection and control equipment, relays, and fault analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to understand the interconnections between systems and component equipment
  • Willingness and capability to assume leadership roles
