Job Summary

The Living Desert is seeking a highly skilled Accountant II to join our team as a Financial Operations Specialist. This role will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with tax and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Operations
    • Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger, including cash receipts, adjustments, and accruals.
    • Maintain monthly reconciliations of balance sheet and income statement accounts, as well as bank account and project schedule reconciliations.
    • Ensure timely and accurate filing and payment of sales and use taxes.
  • Financial Reporting
    • Assist with monthly financial reporting and statement preparation.
    • Manage fixed asset details, capitalization, disposal, and depreciation.
  • Compliance and Risk Management
    • Assist with annual financial audit and act as liaison to independent audit firm to ensure audit process runs smoothly.
    • Develop and implement internal financial controls and procedures to ensure confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Other Duties
    • Perform Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Management activities as necessary.
    • Process Bi-Weekly Payroll as needed.
    • Assist with ad hoc reporting and accounting projects as assigned.
    Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
    • 5 years' experience in progressive accounting roles required.
    • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS).
    • Past auditor experience preferred.
    • Grant accounting and reporting preferred.
    • Knowledge of advanced Financial and Forensic audit techniques preferred.
    • Experience with non-profit accounting, including familiarity of form 990 preparation and restricted funds management preferred.
    • Solid experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) accounting software systems.
    • High proficiency using Microsoft Office, especially using Excel.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • A self-starter who can work independently and with a team.
    • High level of integrity and dependability.
    Working Conditions

This is a sedentary role that primarily involves sitting at a computer station for extended periods. Some lifting, carrying, moving, pushing, and/or pulling of objects/materials of light weight may be required. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to extensive computer work is a potential discomfort/ risk. Weekend and holiday work may be required as needed to meet deadlines. Some evenings may be required during special events. Conference and workshop attendance may be available depending on budgetary demands.
