Job Summary

Unity Health Toronto is seeking a skilled Biochemistry Laboratory Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to biochemistry testing, including routine and special testing, quality control, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions in routine biochemistry, special biochemistry, and toxicology.
  • Rotate workstations as required and perform other related duties as determined by your Operations Leader/Technical Specialist.
  • Prioritize workload and ensure work, including statistics, is completed in the required time frame.
  • Identify abnormalities in test results and take appropriate action, if necessary, to seek advice from appropriate resources.
  • Report and document unexpected or non-conforming events/incidents.
  • Prepare, authorize, and interpret laboratory results.
  • Respond to all inquiries regarding specimen collection, results, and interpretation.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the completion of all duties.
  • Adhere to all elements of the quality program, including testing appropriate quality control samples, performing quality assurance activities, and assessing results.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the quality management system by writing/updating SOPs.
  • Liaise with internal and external customers.
  • Adhere to the laboratory safety program.
  • Participate in material management, inventory management, safety management, performance management, and quality assurance.
  • Participate in the training of technologists, laboratory students, medical students, and residents.
  • Participate in technical research and development activities and continuing education.
  • Participate in test development and validation.

Qualifications
  • Must be registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and possess a current CMLTO registration certificate with biochemistry discipline.
  • Must have recent experience in biochemistry (within the last two years).
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be committed and able to work cooperatively and constructively with other team members.
  • Must understand and be committed to the Hospital mission and values.
  • Must be punctual and have an excellent attendance record.
  • Experience in quality principles, teaching, research/development systems is an asset.

Work Environment
Must be willing and able to work all shifts on days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
