Job Summary
This part-time laboratory support specialist position assists with the preparation, setup, breakdown, and cleanup of biological science laboratories at Broward College. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the laboratory manager to ensure a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation of laboratories for various activities and experiments, including setting up equipment, preparing materials, and ensuring a safe working environment.
- Prepare and maintain chemical solutions and media, including calculating concentrations, measuring and weighing, heating and cooling, and dispensing in appropriate containers.
- Return the laboratory to its original condition after each day's activities, including cleaning, sanitizing, and making minor repairs as necessary.
- Assist with maintaining samples of living organisms, including microorganisms, protozoa, fruitflies, marine organisms, plants, and terrestrial arthropods.
- Assist with maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Dispose of waste materials properly according to established safety and regulatory protocols.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Three or more years of functional experience in a science laboratory setting, including hazardous material training.
- Operational knowledge and understanding in the area of biology, microbiology, zoology, or botany.
- Intermediate knowledge, understanding, and skills in the area of responsibility, including an understanding of concepts and principles of related areas.
- Ability to set priorities, manage time, and contribute as an active team member.
- Ability to interact and effectively communicate with a diverse population of employees and students.
