Position Overview:

Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly qualified individual for the role of Director to oversee the Electrophysiology division within the Pharmacology Department. This role is pivotal to our drug discovery efforts and will be based at our San Diego facility.

The ideal candidate will possess a proven history of achievements in drug discovery and project progression, recognized as a thought leader in electrophysiology and ion channel pharmacology.

The successful applicant will demonstrate extensive expertise in the application and analysis of in vitro cellular electrophysiology and pharmacology assays, including but not limited to Ca2+-imaging and patch clamp techniques, as well as experience with primary human cell assays.

The Director will excel in cross-departmental collaboration and talent development, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Pharmacology.

Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the operations of the electrophysiology team within the Pharmacology Department.
Contribute to the establishment of departmental objectives and ensure alignment with project aims that support corporate strategies.
Supervise staff activities, providing mentorship to foster their professional growth.
Manage recruitment efforts for the team.
Align team initiatives with organizational priorities, adjusting resources as necessary to meet critical deadlines.
Identify and plan the scientific direction for the team while promoting technological advancements.

Ensure the integrity of all laboratory documentation, electronic records, internal reports, patents, and external communications from the team.

Effectively communicate organizational goals and resource availability to the team and project groups in a timely manner.

Coordinate the preparation of comprehensive scientific reports for project teams, senior management, and collaborators, and present updates on team progress as required.


Qualifications and Skills:
Demonstrated excellence in a leadership capacity, with a successful history of developing talent.

Strong scientific leadership abilities, with proven success in areas such as target identification, validation, compound discovery, mechanism elucidation, and compound progression.

In-depth understanding of fundamental pharmacological principles, with a record of applying these principles in vitro or in vivo.

A distinguished history of supporting research project objectives.
A proponent of scientific rigor and integrity within their field of expertise.

A comprehensive understanding of small molecule drug discovery and development, particularly in therapeutic areas such as pain management, neuroscience, and renal or pulmonary diseases.

Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, across all organizational levels.
Ability to make informed, data-driven decisions and convert data into actionable insights.
Meticulous attention to detail in overseeing experimental design, execution, and analysis, as well as scientific documentation.
A proven ability to cultivate diverse talent.
Capability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Educational Background:
Ph.D. (or equivalent) with 9 years of relevant post-doctoral experience, or
Master's Degree (or equivalent) with 12 years of relevant experience, or
Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) with 15 years of relevant experience.

Compensation:
$192,000 - $288,000
