The Surgical Technologist / Operating Room Technician functions as a vital member of the surgical team in creating and maintaining a sterile environment and issuing instruments to surgeons. This role assists in the care and preparation of adult, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, infant, and neonate surgical patients under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN).
Key Responsibilities- Assist in preparation of the surgical rooms, ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
- Assist the surgeon with operative procedures, adhering to strict sterile technique and protocols.
- Participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment, adhering to infection control policies and procedures.
- Prepare and know specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures, ensuring optimal functionality and efficiency.
- Operate the OR sterilizer/steris, ensuring proper functioning and maintenance.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients or the environment, prioritizing patient safety and well-being.
- Assist with cleaning, restocking, and room turnover, maintaining a high level of organization and efficiency.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of unit operations, including patient flow, supply management, and communication protocols.
- Demonstrate knowledge of patient rights and legal issues, both on the surgical unit and hospital-wide.
- Practice guest relations within the surgical services department and hospital-wide, providing exceptional customer service and support.
- Function efficiently and in a professional manner in all aspects of patient care, prioritizing patient needs and satisfaction.
- Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
- Seek learning experiences and participate in orientation of new staff, promoting a culture of continuous learning and growth.
- Participate in setting unit and personal goals, aligning with the hospital's mission and vision.
- Minimum Education: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or having been grandfathered into this role.
- Preferred Education: Certification for Operating Room Technician within 12 months of completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program (Certified Surgical Tech / CST).
- Certifications Required: Healthcare Provider AHA CPR certification.
