Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients of all ages via venipuncture, capillary puncture, and heel sticks. You will also be responsible for maintaining/updating computer competencies as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages via venipuncture, capillary puncture, and heel sticks.
  • Maintain/update computer competencies as required.
  • Perform EKGs for outpatient services.
  • Monitor patients and notify supervisors in the event of an adverse reaction to venipuncture.
  • Organize STAT, scheduled, and random specimen collections and document deliveries.
  • Ascertained that all incoming specimens meet established criteria for quality testing.
  • Perform various computer functions such as assignment of patient encounters, ensures proper patient identification, order entry, documentation of specimen collection, proper specimen labeling, specimen receipt, and prints collection list using the Cerner Lab System.
  • Prints, sorts, and distributes patient test reports according to laboratory schedule.
  • Answers and responds to telephone inquiries, directing physician/patient questions to personnel as appropriate.
  • Greets hospital and ODC outpatients and assists them with questions and concerns.
  • Prepares samples to be sent to reference laboratories.
  • Receives specimens from pneumatic tube system.
  • Centrifuges, aliquots, and delivers prepared specimens to indicated departments.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest technical developments affecting the scope of responsibility.
  • Maintains and updates departmental files.
  • Maintains department equipment.
  • Sorts and distributes mail.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of Phlebotomy Certification Course, Medical Assistant Program, or graduate of a nursing program.
  • Ability to obtain quality specimens from patients of all ages via venipuncture, capillary puncture, and heel sticks.
  • Ability to maintain/update computer competencies as required.
  • Ability to perform EKGs for outpatient services.
