Maintenance Mechanic Leader Job Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic Leader is a critical role at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, responsible for maintaining and controlling various utility systems and equipment. This position reports to the Supervisory Facilities Operations Specialist and is part of the Operations Section of Facilities Management Service.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure proper work methods for installing, modifying, repairing, and maintaining high, medium, and low-pressure stream piping systems and equipment.
  • Lead a work group consisting of 2 Maintenance Mechanics and/or one Utility Systems Repairer/Operator.
  • Pass on instructions from the supervisor to team members, work alongside them, and set the pace.
  • Obtain needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that arise during work.
  • Retain a current knowledge and answer questions on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Adjust workloads to keep everyone busy, check work in progress and when finished to ensure supervisor's instructions are met.
  • Urging or advising others to follow instructions received from the supervisor to meet deadlines.
  • Assure safety and housekeeping rules are followed, and limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded.
Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

Requirements:
  • A specific length of training and experience is not required, but evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality must be shown.
  • Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Working Conditions:

Duties are performed in a modern plant and facility, with continuous noise from equipment and machinery. May be required to work in confined spaces, climb ladders and scaffolding, stand for extended periods, and work outside in inclement weather.
