Position Overview

The Senior Officer of Technology Transfer at Auburn University is responsible for overseeing the commercialization of innovative technologies developed within the institution. This role involves leveraging intellectual property and technology transfer methodologies to tackle intricate challenges that have a significant impact across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will:

  • Identify and evaluate new opportunities for technology commercialization, assessing market potential and competitive landscape.
  • Conduct thorough patent searches and freedom-to-operate analyses for emerging technologies.
  • Develop and implement marketing and licensing strategies tailored to the university's technology portfolio.
  • Negotiate licensing agreements, including equity terms, as necessary.
  • Lead initiatives in business development and special projects related to patent strategies for new inventions.
  • Formulate strategies for intellectual property protection, including patent applications, and manage ongoing patent prosecution with external counsel.
  • Maintain relationships with licensees, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and monitoring their commercialization efforts.
  • Engage with inventors to promote attractive technologies for licensing opportunities.
  • Provide guidance to faculty on industry and government research needs, as well as trends in technology innovation.
  • Educate stakeholders on the commercialization process and advise on university intellectual property policies.
  • Supervise interns involved in commercialization projects.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant fields such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Business, Engineering, Bio-Engineering, or Chemical Engineering with 7 years of experience in technology licensing or commercialization.
  • Master's Degree in the same fields with 5 years of relevant experience.
  • PhD in applicable fields with 3 years of experience in technology licensing or commercialization.

Desired qualifications include experience in higher education and collaboration with industry professionals, along with certifications such as Certified Licensing Specialist and Registered Technology Transfer Professional.
