Pathology Tissue Technician

Under the direct supervision of a Pathologist, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, performs preparation and gross examination of surgical pathology specimens, preparation and staining of fine needle aspiration, bone marrow smears, and frozen sections.
Key Responsibilities- Upholds Kaiser Permanente's Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws.
- Performs autopsy duties, including preparing the body, setting up for autopsy, and cleaning after autopsy.
- Dictates gross description and cassette summary, as well as clinical summary.
- Dissects large and complex specimens, and examines tissue as to type, size/measurement, color, and status.
- Prepares tissue for intraoperative consult, including sectioning of tissue for Frozen Sections as instructed by the Pathologist.
- Assists Pathologist and Clinician in performance of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, FNA, and other studies.
- Processes pathology samples, including accessioning, verifying orders against requisitions, and resolving discrepancies.
- Tracks specimens and prepares them for transportation.
- Maintains the Morgue and Cutting Room, including cleaning, changing solutions, and disposing of tissue and chemical waste.
- Manages overdue reports, files tissue slides and cards, and troubleshoots CoPath computer and dictation equipment.
- Releases slides and reports per policies and procedures, and communicates with patients, clinicians, and hospital staff.
- Individual must have laboratory training, including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS.
- Must be qualified as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.
- Education/training as described below that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution.
- Certification as Histotechnician or Histotechnologist.
- Medical/pathology terminology and basic computer knowledge.
- An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution.
