Job Overview

Under the supervision of Highway Engineer III, IV, V, or Senior Project Engineer, this role involves executing a range of engineering responsibilities in various aspects of planning, design, or construction of transportation initiatives. The incumbent will take the lead on designated projects and tasks, ensuring effective coordination with project teams, governmental bodies, utility firms, local residents, businesses, industry experts, and external suppliers to meet project objectives. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Essential Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Construction, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, along with one (1) year of relevant full-time experience in civil, construction, or electrical engineering is mandatory.

  • Eligibility for the Illinois Engineer Intern Examination with verified documentation from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at the time of application, plus one (1) year of relevant full-time experience in civil, construction, or electrical engineering is mandatory.
-OR-
  • A Master's Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution is mandatory.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with transportation-related projects.
This position is classified as safety-sensitive. Candidates selected for safety-sensitive roles must successfully complete a drug screening as part of the pre-employment background verification process.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Understanding of engineering principles, practices, and techniques relevant to the assigned area.
  • Capability to perform mathematical computations related to engineering tasks.
  • Familiarity with basic computer-aided design and drafting processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret contract plans and specifications.
  • Competence in managing multiple routine assignments.
  • Accountability for the completeness and accuracy of assigned projects.
  • Judgment and initiative in applying engineering principles to projects.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team setting.
  • This position may necessitate travel to various work assignments throughout Cook County, requiring the employee to provide their own reliable means of transportation.
Physical Requirements

Light Work

Light Work entails exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force consistently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Even if the weight lifted is minimal, a job is classified as Light Work when it involves: (1) significant walking or standing; (2) sitting most of the time while operating arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while consistently pushing or pulling materials, even if the weight of the materials is negligible.
