Job Overview
Under the supervision of a Highway Engineer III, IV, V, or Senior Project Engineer, you will engage in a range of engineering activities across various aspects of planning, design, or construction of transportation initiatives. You will take primary responsibility for assigned projects and tasks, ensuring effective coordination with project teams, governmental bodies, utility providers, community members, businesses, industry experts, and external contractors to meet project objectives. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Construction, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, along with one (1) year of full-time experience in civil, construction, or electrical engineering is required.
- Eligibility for the Illinois Engineer Intern Examination with documented proof from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at the time of application, supplemented by one (1) year of full-time experience in civil, construction, or electrical engineering is required.
- A Master's Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering is required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Experience with transportation projects.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of engineering principles, practices, and techniques relevant to the assigned area.
- Capability to perform mathematical calculations pertinent to engineering tasks.
- Familiarity with basic computer-aided design and drafting methods.
- Ability to read and interpret contract plans and specifications.
- Capacity to manage multiple routine assignments.
- Responsibility for the completeness and accuracy of assigned projects.
- Judgment and initiative in applying engineering principles to projects.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team setting.
- This position may require travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide their own transportation.
Light Work
Light Work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Even if the weight lifted is minimal, a job is rated as Light Work when it requires: (1) walking or standing to a significant degree; (2) sitting most of the time while operating arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while consistently pushing or pulling materials, even if the weight of the materials is negligible.
