About the Role

This position is located at the Ft. Belvoir Veterinary Treatment Facility, providing an opportunity to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. As an Animal Health Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the veterinary team in providing high-quality care to patients.

Responsibilities
  • Assist veterinarians in preparing for and during surgical procedures, including preparing surgery packs, scalpel blades, and suture material.
  • Monitor patients using an anesthetic machine and inform medical staff of changes in the patient's condition.
  • Prepare and administer vaccinations, oral and topical medications to patients as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Prepare and dispense prescription medication according to veterinarian instructions.
  • Apply knowledge of common topics to assist clients in solving common husbandry problems.
  • Apply knowledge of preventive care, disease prevention, lifestyle risks, and veterinary care to provide individualized wellness counseling to clients.
Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must have a minimum of six (6) months demonstrated experience directly related to the duties required in the position, gained through practical application in a Veterinary Medical setting. This experience must demonstrate the knowledge, clinical skills, and abilities essential to perform successfully in accordance with the guidelines of the AVMA or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of a registration, license, or certification as a veterinary assistant or higher through an accredited program is highly preferred. Additionally, basic supply management experience, including ordering supplies, maintaining sufficient stock levels, and completing monthly inventory counts, is also highly preferred.
