Job Description

Summary:
The ideal candidate will deliver culturally competent legal services to economically disadvantaged clients facing housing instability by advocating for them in court.

Key Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney will be tasked with, but not limited to:

  • Providing legal counsel and support to clients to help them maintain their housing.
  • Managing a comprehensive caseload involving full representation in non-payment and holdover cases in Housing Court.
  • Conducting litigation before relevant administrative bodies as required, including termination hearings.
  • Engaging in community outreach, which includes leading educational workshops and training sessions.
  • Representing tenants during trial proceedings.
  • Drafting legal documents, agreements, motions, and orders.
  • Assessing the merits and identifying issues in assigned court cases.
  • Exhibiting a strong commitment to public interest law and advocating for social justice.

Professional & Personal Qualifications:
Applicants should possess:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • A minimum of four years of relevant experience.
  • Five or more years of trial experience is advantageous.
  • Experience in litigation.
  • Knowledge of New York City housing regulations and public assistance programs.
  • The ability to thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in client representation, managing cases from initiation to resolution.
  • Strong skills in teamwork and the ability to work independently.
  • High ethical standards and integrity.
  • Excellent communication, research, organizational, and writing abilities.
  • The capacity to foresee potential legal issues.
  • Experience working with low-income populations.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Exceptional time management skills.
  • Maturity, integrity, and sound judgment.
