Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse II (Per Diem and Long Term Assignments) is tasked with delivering both direct and indirect care to patients and their families in inpatient and designated surgical and outpatient settings. This role requires the nurse to proficiently execute the responsibilities of a registered nurse within the designated environment. The nurse will also delegate and oversee care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and the established nursing role, collaborating with other members of the clinical team and utilizing critical pathways or multidisciplinary care plans.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Effectively provides nursing care tailored to the specific age-related needs of patients.
  2. Encourages patient and family involvement in care based on their physiological and psychological readiness.
  3. Evaluates and documents patient responses to prescribed interventions.
  4. Fosters collaborative relationships with colleagues, patients, and families.
  5. Communicates patient progress clearly to the Charge Nurse and other healthcare professionals.
  6. Utilizes a variety of medical equipment, medications, and other modalities, demonstrating knowledge of their purposes and expected outcomes.

Quality of Service:

  1. Promotes cost-effective use of resources by consulting with the Charge Nurse regarding patient care strategies.
  2. Respects and incorporates patient/family cultural beliefs and practices into care interventions.
  3. Exhibits trust, respect, and caring attitudes towards patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  4. Engages in Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research initiatives at the unit level.
  5. Adheres to regulatory compliance standards and participates in unit-level activities.

Operational Duties:

  1. Supports the Charge Nurse's decisions and may assume charge responsibilities as needed.
  2. Adheres to hospital policies ensuring patient security and safety.
  3. Follows AACN guidelines for a Healthy Work Environment, participating as a team member focused on communication, collaboration, and effective decision-making.

Professional Growth:

  1. Acts as a preceptor, coach, and mentor for new nurses and students, contributing to the development of ancillary personnel.
  2. Completes all required educational training annually.
  3. Maintains competencies relevant to the patient care setting.

Patient Safety:

  1. Ensures patient safety through proactive participation in safety initiatives.
  2. Takes corrective action for identified risks to patient safety.
  3. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management.
  4. Identifies potential risks in processes and communicates them to relevant authorities.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  1. Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Maryland or a Nurse Compact License.
  2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  3. Minimum of two years of recent clinical nursing experience in a comparable setting.
  4. Completion of 10 contact hours of continuing education every two years.

Licensure and Certifications:

  1. Med-Surg/Telemetry:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS)
    2. National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  2. Labor & Delivery:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  3. Mother/Baby:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  4. Pediatrics:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS)
  5. Operating Room:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS)
  6. Intermediate Care Unit:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  7. Behavioral Health:
    1. Basic Life Support (BLS), Cognitive Behavior Interventions (CBI) Training

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Exhibits strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  2. Maintains confidentiality and privacy for patients and families.
  3. Evaluates and reports patient responses based on interdisciplinary care plans to facilitate timely discharge.
  4. Proficient in using computer systems for managing patient information.
  5. Participates in team-building efforts, modeling effective teamwork.
  6. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary for providing age-appropriate care across diverse patient populations.
