Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse II (Per Diem and Long-Term Assignments) is tasked with delivering both direct and indirect care to patients and their families in inpatient and designated surgical and outpatient settings. This role requires the nurse to proficiently execute the responsibilities associated with registered nursing within the designated environment. The nurse will delegate and oversee care in alignment with the Nurse Practice Act and the professional nursing standards, collaborating effectively with the clinical team while utilizing critical pathways or multidisciplinary care plans.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties:

  1. Exhibits the capability to provide nursing care tailored to the specific age-related needs of patients.
  2. Encourages patient and family involvement in care, considering their physiological and psychological readiness.
  3. Assesses and documents patient responses to prescribed interventions.
  4. Fosters collaborative relationships with colleagues, patients, and families.
  5. Communicates patient progress succinctly to the Charge Nurse and other healthcare professionals.
  6. Effectively utilizes medical equipment, medications, and other resources pertinent to the assigned area, demonstrating a clear understanding of their intended outcomes.

Quality and Service:

  1. Contributes to cost-effective resource management by consulting with the Charge Nurse regarding patient issues to enhance continuity of care.
  2. Respects and integrates patient and family cultural beliefs into care interventions as outlined in care plans.
  3. Exhibits trust, respect, and compassion towards patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  4. Engages in Performance Improvement initiatives and contributes to evidence-based practices at the unit level.
  5. Adheres to regulatory compliance standards and participates in unit-level activities.

Operational Responsibilities:

  1. Supports decisions made by the Charge Nurse and assumes charge responsibilities as needed.
  2. Complies with hospital policies ensuring patient safety and security.
  3. Adheres to AACN guidelines promoting a Healthy Work Environment through effective communication and collaboration.

Professional Growth:

  1. Acts as a mentor and coach for new nurses and students, contributing to the development of ancillary staff.
  2. Completes all required educational training annually.
  3. Maintains competencies relevant to the patient care environment.

Patient Safety:

  1. Ensures patient safety in all job functions and participates in safety initiatives.
  2. Takes corrective actions to mitigate observed risks to patient safety.
  3. Reports adverse events and identifies potential risks in processes and procedures.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  1. Valid and unencumbered Registered Nurse license in Maryland or a Nurse Compact License.
  2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  3. Minimum of two years of recent clinical nursing experience in a comparable setting.
  4. Completion of 10 contact hours of continuing education every two years.

Licensure and Certifications:

  1. Med-Surg/Telemetry: Basic Life Support (BLS), National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
  2. Labor & Delivery: Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  3. Mother/Baby: Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  4. Pediatrics: Basic Life Support (BLS).
  5. Operating Room: Basic Life Support (BLS).
  6. Intermediate Care Unit: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  7. Behavioral Health: Basic Life Support (BLS), Cognitive Behavior Interventions (CBI) Training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Exhibits strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  2. Maintains confidentiality and privacy for patients and families.
  3. Evaluates and reports patient responses based on interdisciplinary care plans to facilitate timely discharge.
  4. Proficient in using computer systems for managing patient information.
  5. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration within the unit.
  6. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to diverse patient populations.
