Job Summary

Under the direction of the head lifeguard, the Pool Safety Specialist is responsible for creating and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool and surrounding pool deck. Primary responsibility falls on ensuring the safety of all swimmers in the swimming pool by strictly enforcing safety rules and regulations, anticipating and mitigating injuries and incidents, and recognizing and responding to emergencies that occur in and around the pool.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks; monitors pool activities, administers first aid, and performs water rescues and resuscitations as necessary.
  • Completes opening responsibilities upon arrival and closing responsibilities prior to departure (posted in lifeguard office). Checks the pool for hazardous conditions and remedies them upon arrival. Effectively maintains cleanliness of pool area and upkeep of pool equipment and ropes, deck furniture, and lifeguard station at all times.
  • Maintains constant active surveillance of the pool area. Enforces all pool rules in a clear, non-discriminatory, and consistent manner to all members and visitors. Always strives to maintain the safest possible environment.
  • Welcoming to members and guests. Develops positive relationships and offers guidance, whether with questions about the pool or other areas of the club.
  • Recognizes and effectively responds to all aquatic emergencies. Keeps constant surveillance over all persons in the pool area; remains alert, listens attentively to noises, distinguishes distress signals, and scans the entire pool with clear vision every 10 seconds.
  • Completes and submits any incident/accident reports promptly and appropriately.
  • Observes and enforces all rules, regulations, and procedures of the facility; reviews and tests knowledge of policies, rules, regulations and procedures (emergency and safety) to ensure compliance.
  • Reports any property damages or repairs needed to the head lifeguard and/or maintenance director and takes initiative to learn basic pool maintenance skills.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Performs other related duties that may be assigned by a manager.
Requirements
  • Ability to swim and perform physically strenuous tasks required of a lifeguard for water rescues.
  • Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
  • Duties may require occasional lifting and/or moving up to 40+ pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, and the ability to see and hear noises and distress signals in and around water.
  • Change mode of lifeguarding (sitting, standing, and walking) every five minutes.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum age requirement is 16 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain current certifications in: Lifeguard Certification with First Aid, and CPR PRO (for the Professional Rescuer) with AED (obtained through the American Red Cross, YMCA, American Lifeguard Association, or other state or nationally accredited program).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six months to one year of work experience as a certified lifeguard.
