Position Overview
The Library Assistant I is responsible for supporting the overall operations of the Library. This includes organizing materials, assisting patrons in locating resources, and ensuring the library environment is orderly and welcoming.
Key Responsibilities
The Library Assistant I will undertake the following tasks:
- Accurately sort and shelve library resources in accordance with established classification systems.
- Maintain the organization and cleanliness of shelves; perform tasks such as straightening, organizing, and dusting as necessary.
- Assist in locating and retrieving library materials for patrons.
- Manage the transportation of returned library items.
- Guide patrons to the appropriate staff members and departments for their inquiries.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
Additional Information
The Library Assistant I will be expected to demonstrate the following skills and attributes:
- Ability to sort and shelve materials accurately, with a basic understanding of library classification systems.
- Capability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with a friendly demeanor suitable for public interaction and a commitment to excellent customer service.
- Ability to comprehend written instructions and communicate effectively.
- Flexibility to work as needed to meet the library's operational requirements.
- Willingness to learn and utilize library technology and software.
- Professionalism in serving the community and maintaining positive public relations.
- Openness to receiving guidance and feedback from supervisors and colleagues.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
This role requires the ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and maneuver wheeled book carts weighing up to 200 pounds. The position involves standing or sitting for extended periods, moving throughout the library to assist patrons, and performing tasks that require reaching and bending.
