Structural Steel Erector Job Summary

Mortenson is seeking a skilled Structural Steel Erector to assemble and install structural steel members to reinforce concrete or building structures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up and inspect cranes to ensure safe operation
  • Inspect rigging to ensure proper use and safety
  • Run site levels to ensure accurate measurements
  • Check-in truck deliveries and inspect cargo
  • Count and organize rebar, dobies, and wire mesh
  • Direct forklift/crane operators to unload delivery trucks
  • Shake out rebar and distribute/organize accordingly
  • Tie rebar intersections with tie wire
  • Splice mats or rebar sections together
  • Install mechanical rebar splices
  • Install caps on vertical rebar dowels
  • Install rebar dowels into fresh concrete footings
  • Determine reinforcing rod placement from blueprints or oral instructions
  • Bend steel rods with hand tools or rodbending machine
  • Reinforce concrete with wire mesh
  • Install prefabricated ornamental ironwork
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
Renewable Energy Group Accountabilities:
  • Receive and offload major components
  • Install loose components for Nacelle, hub, and tower preparation
  • Connect blades to hub
  • Set base and tower sections
  • Manage taglines
  • Involved with main erection crane assembly and teardown
  • Climb ladders up to 80m

Qualifications:

  • Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, crouch, kneel, climb, and periodically lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and load charts
  • Knowledge of equipment and their uses
  • Understand and apply basic mathematical skills
  • Ability to work independently
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Equipment certifications as required
  • 1 year of related experience preferred
  • Valid driver's license of proper class and necessary endorsements
  • Pass the Apprentice Aptitude Test
