About the Role
The Homelessness Prevention Administration (HPA) is committed to ensuring that New Yorkers have access to stable and affordable housing. Collaborating with various city agencies and organizations, HPA plays a crucial role in assisting families and individuals facing housing challenges.
As part of the Rental Assistance Unit, we are looking for two (2) Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialists II to serve as Rental Assistance Case Consultants. Key responsibilities include:
- Evaluating requests for rent arrears and other housing emergencies.
- Assessing exceptions to policy from various organizations and legal entities.
- Reviewing submissions from legal providers and authorizing payments for assistance with rent arrears and emergency housing grants.
- Processing requests to prevent eviction through timely authorization of rent arrears payments.
- Providing alternatives to maintain housing for both public and non-public assistance families.
- Intervening in urgent cases to avert eviction and maintaining detailed logs of case activities in the Rental Assistance Database (RAD).
Work Schedule
Various schedules are available, including 9 AM to 5 PM and 10 AM to 6 PM.
Qualifications
1. A high school diploma or its equivalent, along with three years of full-time experience in social or human services, focusing on:
- Client services.
- Employment planning and counseling services, including job development and placement.
2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, plus 18 months of full-time experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist.

4. College credits may substitute for experience on a basis of 60 semester credits for 9 months of work experience, but candidates must still have at least 18 months of relevant experience.
