Outpatient Mental Health Registered Nurse

This is a full-time Registered Nurse position located in the Mental Health Services department at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care to veterans with mental health needs.
Key Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with mental health needs.
- Review medication needs and collaborate with the treatment team for appointments and medication.
- Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
- Support patient safety with 1:1 observation of suicidal patients.
- Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in program-level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
- Assessing veterans for safety.
- Triage veterans seeking admission to our inpatient acute unit and/or those coming to the walk-in clinic.
- Care coordination.
- Working with veterans with substance use disorder and mental health-related disorders.
- Telephone triage.
- Patient education related to disease process and medication education.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Respond to crisis calls.
- Medication administration.
- Medication monitoring.
- Lab collection.
- Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Experience working in mental health, substance abuse, and acute psychiatric settings.
This position is in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status. The Department of Veterans Affairs performs pre-employment reference checks as an assessment method used in the hiring process to verify information provided by a candidate.
