SAIC is seeking a skilled Linux Systems Engineer to join our team, supporting the Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Technology. This role is essential in delivering robust security services aligned with the Department's objectives in managing an advanced Identity Credential and Access Management (ICAM) program. The position is categorized under the Identity Services Support Service-Line.

The selected engineer will be tasked with the installation and oversight of Unix/Linux open-source operating systems, ensuring they meet client specifications. Responsibilities include troubleshooting user challenges, managing change requests, and proactively identifying potential issues through the implementation of security measures. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in designing, deploying, and monitoring Linux infrastructures, maintaining systems, and collaborating with IT teams to develop automation solutions and deployment strategies.

This position offers a hybrid work model, requiring a minimum of three days per week onsite.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer the Operating System configurations, including file systems, log files, processes, and problem resolution.
  • Install, configure, and sustain servers within a Linux environment.
  • Demonstrate expert-level proficiency in Linux administration, server virtualization, and application/web server management, including Apache and Tomcat.
  • Monitor the performance and health of Linux servers through both automated and manual methodologies.
  • Design and implement infrastructure monitoring and reporting tools utilizing scripting languages such as BASH and PowerShell.
  • Conduct server hardware maintenance and upgrades as necessary.
  • Collaborate with team members to create test automation frameworks.
  • Develop tools aimed at enhancing the functionality and efficiency of existing infrastructure.
  • Maintain software repositories and ensure timely application of software updates.
  • Document procedures, configurations, and program details comprehensively.

Qualifications

Essential Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree with five years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with three years of experience in IT, information security, or systems engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient scripting skills in languages such as Python, Ruby, or Perl.
  • Familiarity with automation technologies.
  • Strong communication and documentation capabilities.
  • Experience managing Linux servers in virtualized settings.
  • In-depth knowledge of Linux scripting languages.
  • Experience with the installation, configuration, and management of services like Bind and Apache.
  • Proficient in the management and troubleshooting of Java and Tomcat applications.
  • Solid understanding of configuration management tools, including Puppet and Chef.
  • Experience with network protection devices, including firewalls and intrusion detection systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with databases such as MS SQL, Oracle, or DB2.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a Top Secret Clearance.
  • Must secure an interim Top Secret clearance prior to commencing work.

Preferred Skills:

  • Background in systems engineering and requirements analysis.
  • Experience in operational security and incident response using tools like IDS and antivirus software.
  • Relevant security certifications.
  • Familiarity with ICAM-related technologies and enterprise security practices.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
