Job Summary:

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Patient Care Technician PPS to join our team. As a key member of the patient-centered care team, you will provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical staff/providers. Your responsibilities will include assisting nursing and medical staff with procedures and/or tests, and patients with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). You will also perform specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record.

Primary Duties:
  • Assist patients with ADLs and personal hygiene, including bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, and range of motion activities. Assist with patient mobilization and rehabilitation, use of crutches and walkers, and transfer/transport of patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.
  • Collect specimens; perform venipuncture/phlebotomy; obtain EKGs; apply electrodes and initiate physiologic monitoring equipment; and insert intravenous (IV) catheters, change IV sites and dressings, and routine inspection of IV sites.
  • Accurately take and record patient's vital signs, height and weight, pulse oximetry, point of care and waived testing (i.e., finger sticks for glucose monitoring/Accucheck), etc.
  • Perform routine treatments/activities including Foley Catheter insertion, removal, and care; suctioning; simple wound care; turning and positioning; postmortem care; maintenance of drainage tubes with/without pump or suction; set-up and care of oxygen equipment; shave preps; and assistance in the application, maintenance and removal of traction, casts, splints, slings, TED and SCD supports, and other immobilization equipment.
  • Assist the nursing staff/provider with pre-procedural/pre-operative preparations and/or examinations/procedures. Act as scrub assistant during surgical procedures. Prepare instruments, surgical supplies, and other equipment; and assist in the basic setup and breakdown of equipment and patient areas to expedite turnover.
  • Participate in the equipment cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of instrumentation in accordance with infection control procedures/standards and aseptic techniques in the perioperative, surgical and procedure areas. Maintain the comfort, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient. Perform patient observation duty, including 1:1 observation, and application of restraints. Prepare patients to be seen by providers. Assist providers and registered nurses in patient examinations and procedures. Report actual and potential problems concerning patients/families, including changes in the patient's condition, to the registered nurse and care team. Initiate and assist in CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) when indicated.
  • Participate in patient/family teaching and respond to questions from patients, families, and visitors promptly, referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary. Maintain the cleanliness and safety of patient rooms/environment by distributing and changing linen/towels, removing used meal trays, checking bed siderails/safety restraints, etc. Assist environmental services support (e.g., linen management, trash removal and cleaning patient rooms). Order necessary supplies to maintain par levels. Receive and stock equipment/supplies and maintain orderly supply/utility rooms. Check supplies for sterility integrity. Restock supplies in patient rooms.
  • Transport and/or escort patients during discharges, transfers, and/or medical appointments. Complete errands such as delivering specimens to the laboratory, equipment, and supplies, etc.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
  • 1-2 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) in Maryland.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support).
  • Experience as a care technician or surgical/scrub technician preferred.
  • General health care experience in acute or long-term care preferred.
  • Student nurse in junior or senior year preferred.
  • CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) preferred.
