Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Patient Care Technician to join our team in the Emergency Department. As a key member of our patient-centered care team, you will provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or medical providers. This role requires basic math knowledge and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care activities, including assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene, and performing eye and ear irrigation, nourishments, and other treatments as identified by department/hospital policy.
  • Collect specimens, perform venipuncture/phlebotomy, obtain EKGs, and insert intravenous (IV) catheters, change IV sites, and dressings, and apply oxygen equipment.
  • Assist in the measurement and documentation of patient's vital signs, height and weight, pulse oximetry, point of care and waived testing, visual acuity, and other pertinent data or information in the patient's health record.
  • Maintain the comfort, privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services, and perform patient observation duty, 1:1 observation, and safe application of restraints.
  • Prepare patients to be seen by providers, assist providers and registered nurses, round on patients based on established standards, and report concerns from patients/families to the registered nurse and care team.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of patient environment, including distributing and changing linen, removing used meal trays, checking bed/stretcher siderails and safety restraints, and restocking supplies in patient rooms/bays.
Qualifications
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant from the relevant district.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • 1-2 years' experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • Experience as a care technician, emergency medical technician, or paramedic preferred.
  • General Health Care experience in acute care, long-term care, or other setting preferred.
  • CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) certification preferred.
