Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Research Scientist to lead our research team in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia. The successful candidate will provide advanced technical support for research projects, engage in scientific experimentation, and undertake administrative responsibilities essential for the efficient functioning of the research team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct routine molecular cloning tasks, including DNA sequencing and PCR.
  • Maintain cultured cell lines, including cell culture and cell line management.
  • Manage a mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, and animal care.
  • Perform basic behavioral tasks, including animal handling and behavioral testing.
  • Conduct stereotaxic surgeries for viral injections, including surgical planning and execution.
  • Learn and analyze basic optical imaging experiments, including data collection and analysis.
  • Perform basic immunohistology procedures, including tissue preparation and staining.
Managerial Responsibilities
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory space, including inventory management and waste disposal.
  • Maintain equipment in working condition, including calibration and maintenance.
  • Process purchases and liaise with vendors for procurement purposes.
  • Supervise multiple research team members and oversee complex research activities.
  • Ensure compliance with established practices and operational standards.
  • Train research team members and enforce adherence to laboratory protocols.
  • Manage and coordinate research projects within the team.
  • Provide advice on technical procedures and equipment.
  • Represent the research team in interactions with university committees.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., neuroscience, biology, pharmacology).
  • Experience: 6 years of experience in a research technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of research-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in a relevant field.
    • Proven experience in molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and animal handling.
    • Experience with behavioral tasks, stereotaxic surgeries, and immunohistology preferred.
    • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Prior experience in research management or supervision is desirable.
Physical Demands

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

A competitive salary will be offered commensurate with the candidate's experience. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
