POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is essential in ensuring the safety and security of individuals in custody while under the supervision of the County Sheriff. The officer will engage in the development of programs, policies, or objectives pertinent to their work group and department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular inspections of the detention facility, including catwalks, separations, and hallways to uphold security standards.
- Maintain order within the detention environment; oversee daily inmate activities to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Verify the records and identification of inmates during the booking and release processes. Perform regular inspections of inmates and their cells as necessary. Supervise work details and monitor their progress.
- Confirm arrest documentation prior to accepting individuals into custody and remain informed about various offense classifications. Observe programs and activities involving inmate interactions with external professionals.
- Assist partner agencies with internal computer systems during the booking process and manage incoming inmates who may pose a risk.
- Ensure the maintenance of fire-life safety equipment. Operate mechanical security devices and keep detailed records of activities, incidents, inspections, and other required functions.
- Supervise inmate feeding and hygiene practices.
- Account for and manage issued equipment responsibly. Support colleagues in their duties. Act as an in-house bailiff for the justice of the peace/magistrate.
- Maintain an accurate count of inmates and oversee visitation processes. Enforce jail regulations and prepare reports for disciplinary actions.
- Participate in emergency management activities during local disaster situations as directed by county management.
Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old.
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- No prior experience is necessary. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to effectively engage with the public and fellow employees. Capability to complete assigned tasks promptly.
- Possess a valid Texas Driver's License and successfully pass required examinations, including polygraph, psychological, physical screening, and urinalysis.
- Basic Jailer Certification must be obtained within the first year of employment. Eligibility for licensing by TCOLE is required. Willingness to work rotating shifts is necessary.
SALARY RANGE: $20.91 per hour
