Job Summary

This is a National Guard Title 32 Excepted Service Position. As a Surface Maintenance Mechanic Leader, you will be responsible for leading a team of technicians in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assign work orders to specific crew members and select workers for various jobs based on knowledge and experience.
  • Pass on instructions received from the supervisor and demonstrate proper work methods.
  • Ensure plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available and needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Work with other workers to set pace and perform non-supervisory repair work of the same kind/level as that done by the group led.
  • Check work in progress when finished for compliance with supervisor's instructions, work orders, and established shop procedures.
  • Direct and advise workers to follow supervisor's instructions to meet deadlines.
  • Answer questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Interpret work instructions and assist repairers/trainees in the more difficult/complex tasks.
  • Provide information to the supervisor on the status/progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations/problems.
  • Ensure that safety/housekeeping rules are followed.
  • Troubleshoot, perform maintenance/major repairs on heavy duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot repairs, overhaul major systems, and make repairs to assemblies/components.
  • Diagnose the cause of mechanical failures by visual/auditory checks and use test equipment.
  • Utilize embedded diagnostics equipment and a variety of original equipment manufacturer system analyzers to determine the exact nature/extent of repair.
  • Conduct readiness/repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity.
  • Perform operational inspections and ensure vehicles/equipment are serviced and inspected prior to use during IDT/AT.
Requirements
  • Military Grades: Enlisted (E5 to E9) or Warrant Officer (WO1 to CW4)
  • Minimum Requirements: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series.
  • Experience or training that demonstrates the candidate's ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.
  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: (24 months) In addition to the journeyman level knowledge, experience that demonstrates the ability to plan, organize, and lead the work of others in fields directly related to the repair function of this occupational series.
