Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vehicle Driver III to join our team at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services. As a Vehicle Driver III, you will be responsible for transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory passengers on short and long-distance trips using state-owned motor vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate state-owned motor vehicles, such as Full-Size Van, Wheelchair Van, Paratransit/Small Bus, truck, and/or car, to transport passengers to on and off-campus appointments and activities.
  • Secure cargo, such as food and beverage coolers, clothing items, and/or medical supplies, in accordance with instructions provided.
  • Comply with best practices for vehicle operation and safety, including obeying posted maximum and minimum speed limits, adjusting speed during heavy traffic, inclement weather, low visibility, or other poor driving conditions, and avoiding distracted driving practices.
  • Assist designated staff in the safe loading and unloading of passengers, ensuring ambulatory passengers use safety restraints and wheelchairs are properly secured in the vehicle.
  • Maintain vehicles at optimal condition, performing basic vehicle maintenance, completing preventive maintenance checks, and documenting results.
  • Prepare and maintain records and logs related to vehicle operations, including documenting vehicle problems and reporting the need for minor vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to other drivers, in accordance with experience and competency, in the proper operation of vehicles, passenger loading and unloading procedures, and techniques for maintaining an on-time schedule.
Requirements:
  • Working knowledge of methods used in transporting individuals unique to Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF).
  • Knowledge and understanding of motor vehicle operations and traffic safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of passenger loading and unloading procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Skill in the operation/driving of motor vehicles, such as Full-Size Van, Wheelchair Van, Paratransit/Small Bus, truck, and/or car.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a cooperative and positive manner.
  • Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating vehicles.
  • Ability to understand and comply with written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to do simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of long periods of sitting/driving, standing, and to carry, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to tell time and work on a schedule.
  • Ability to tolerate cold and hot weather conditions.
  • Ability to complete the HHSC designated Defensive Driving Course and maintain this certification.
  • Ability to understand and sign the "New/Existing Employee – Driver Qualification Statement" regarding driving eligibility.
  • Ability to complete and pass the appropriate Van Driver Training courses for the type(s) of vehicle being operated.
Working Conditions:

The Vehicle Driver III will work in a fast-paced environment, transporting passengers to various locations, and will be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.

The Vehicle Driver III will be required to work in various weather conditions, including heavy traffic, inclement weather, low visibility, or other poor driving conditions.

The Vehicle Driver III will be required to lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The Vehicle Driver III will be required to work in a team environment, communicating with others in a cooperative and positive manner.
