Job Description

The Behavioral Health Support Specialist plays a vital role in maintaining a therapeutic milieu by performing assigned tasks and carrying out patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel. This position requires a strong commitment to providing safe and professional patient care, adhering to Joint Commission standards, federal and state regulations, and Oceans' policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Adhere to Professional Standards: Follow policies and procedures, abide by federal, state, and local requirements, as well as Joint Commission standards.
  • Safeguard Patient Care: Effectively apply supportive behavior when assisting in the control of patients who exhibit unacceptable behavior, demonstrating the ability to employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions as needed.
  • Patient Belongings and Safety Checks: Inventory patient belongings accurately and secure contraband as needed; complete unit safety checks.
  • Infection Control and Patient Care: Comply with standard/universal precautions and infection control policies, attending required in-services to stay informed.
  • Implement Patient Care Activities: Perform vital signs, weights, ADLs, intake and output documentation, nutritional monitoring, and communicate findings to the nurse, ensuring patients receive appropriate diets by reviewing dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences.
  • Assist Patients with Daily Needs: Assist patients with laundry, meals, bathroom functions, and maintaining personal belongings; assist at-risk and physically challenged patients with mobility needs as needed.
  • Culturally Sensitive Care: Individualize all patient care activities to the age-specific, disability, and cultural sensitivity needs of the patient.
  • Documentation and Communication: Communicate and document patient observations and findings effectively in the patient record; document patient departures from the unit, significant occurrences, observed behavior, vital signs, nutrition intake, and patient observation findings on assigned patients as requested by the registered nurse.
  • Collaboration and Continuity of Care: Communicate outcomes of assigned tasks to nursing staff in a timely manner, communicating follow-up on patient care responsibilities, incomplete assignments, ongoing activities, and current patient needs to relevant staff to assure continuity of care.
