Job Summary

The Mental Health Aide Emergency Department provides support to patients with acute psychiatric needs in the Emergency Department. This role requires a strong understanding of human anatomy, basic medical terminology, and rehabilitation principles. The ideal candidate will have experience working with psychiatric patients, preferably in an inpatient setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Obtain verbal report from the patient's nurse to include information regarding the patient's identified care needs, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, as well as any special considerations.
• Provide physical support to assist assigned patients with daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising.
• Review patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patients receive appropriate diets.
• Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
• Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.
• Maintain patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.
• Function cooperatively as a team member, responding as directed by the responsible nurse to changing patients'/unit's needs.
• Communicate in a professional manner and demonstrate respect for patients, families/significant others, and other healthcare members.
• Accurately and legibly record data collected and notify the RN of any untoward events, i.e., physical symptoms, behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
• Six (6) months minimum experience in Emergency Department or inpatient setting working with psychiatric patients. Adult and/or adolescent psych unit experience highly preferred. Consideration will be given to those with experience in an inpatient chemical dependency unit.
• Current California State Nurse Assistant certification required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
• Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish).
• Basic computer skills.
• Current Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB) within 90 days of hire.
• Completion of Sitter training course within 30 days of start date.
• Service Orientation - Actively looking for ways to help people.
