Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Cardiovascular Laboratory Manager, this Registered Nurse will assist physicians performing cardiac catheterizations and other cardiovascular procedures. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in critical care and experience working in a fast-paced cath lab environment.

Responsibilities
  • Set up the laboratory prior to procedures, ensuring that all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
  • Review patient medical records and evaluate relevant data, including laboratory reports, allergies, baseline vital signs, and current medications.
  • Prepare and position patients for procedures, explaining the process and alleviating any anxieties.
  • Assist technologists in positioning patients and maintaining a sterile field during procedures.
  • Monitor patients' emotional and medical status during procedures, alerting physicians to any abnormalities.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures, including patients' conditions, medications administered, and tests performed.
  • Assist physicians throughout procedures, including administering medications, injecting contrast media, handling catheters and guide wires, and drawing blood samples.
  • Participate in emergency procedures, including CPR, establishing airways, administering medications, and defibrillating patients as necessary.
  • Apply dressings as needed, summarize nursing notes, and continue to observe patients for post-operative complications.
  • Document procedures in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Arrange for patient discharge and transfer, communicating patient status to receiving units.
  • May perform some duties of technologists, including operating equipment such as contrast injectors, cardiac output computers, and cameras.
  • Meet and maintain credential, experience, and computer requirements.
  • Participate in research activities and serve as a preceptor as assigned.
  • Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, as well as objectives for quality improvement, environmental, and standard precaution infection control.
Requirements
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing and current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Rhode Island.
  • BLS (American Heart Association) certification required.
  • ACLS certification required.
  • Professional expertise and analytical ability to evaluate patients' conditions, plan, and carry out professional nursing care.
  • Ability to monitor patients' status.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of the aging process, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each stage of the care process.
Experience

3 years of RN experience in critical care or cath lab preferred. Candidates with at least 3 years of congruent critical care experience (e.g., AEMT, AEMT-C, Paramedic, RCIS) will also be considered.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Physical ability for considerable standing with lead apron, walking during procedures, and carrying supplies and equipment.
  • Some exposure to low-level radiation from x-ray equipment, infection from blood samples, shock hazards from high voltage cables, and physical effort in the form of lifting and pushing equipment.
  • Hazards and chance of illness or injury are minimized with strict observance of safety procedures.
